Astana talks to start on August 1

"The 13th round of Astana talks on Syria will be held in Nursultan on August 1 and 2, with the participation of delegations from Lebanon and Iraq for the first time," the Kazakh Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday.

"The city of Nursultan is hosting the thirteenth round of the high-level international forum on Syria in the form of Astana," the foreign ministry said in a statement.

"The talks will be assisted by senior representatives of the United Nations and Jordan, as well as Lebanon and Iraq, which are participating in the Astana process for the first time."

The statement pointed out that the next round will focus on discussing the latest developments in Syria, especially in Idlib and the north-east of the country, and subsequent measures to enhance confidence between the conflicting parties and move the political process, including issues of forming and launching the work of the constitutional committee.

August 1 is expected to see a series of bilateral and multilateral preparatory consultations, including with the participation of the Syrian government and opposition, and on August 2, the plenary session will be held.
