Afghan government responds to Taliban truce by releasing prisoners

On Monday, the Afghan authorities announced the release of about 100 Taliban prisoners in a military prison, and it came in response to the surprise truce declared by the rebels on Eid al-Fitr.

"The government of Afghanistan released today, Monday,100 Taliban prisoners from Bagram prison," Javed Faisal, the spokesman for the National Security Council said.

The government plans to release two thousand rebel prisoners as a "goodwill gesture" in response to Sunday's ceasefire announcement which enhances the chances of launching internal peace talks.
