Defense Secretary: Turkish attack freed detainees from ISIS

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said on Tuesday that Turkey's attack on northern and eastern Syria had led to the release of "captured ISIS fighters."

The US official said that, "NATO", will hold a meeting next week to take diplomatic and economic measures against Turkey, adding that "the Turkish attack undermined the international mission against ISIS in Syria."

Esper described in a statement the Turkish military operation as "unnecessary and reckless", and may result in the return of "terrorist" Daesh.

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that the US Department of Commerce would suspend its trade negotiations with Turkey and that he was issuing executive decisions to impose sanctions on Turkish officials and anyone who contributes to Turkey's destabilizing attacks in northeast Syria.
