European Union condemns Turkish attack on N, E of Syria

The European Union has said that Turkey must stop its attacks on northern and eastern Syria, withdraw from it and respect international humanitarian law.

"The European Council took note of the Turkish-American announcement tonight to suspend all military operations," the 28 European leaders said in a statement issued by the summit.

"The leaders again urge Turkey to end its military activity, withdraw its forces and respect international humanitarian law," the statement added.

The EU also stressed that member states have decided to stop exporting arms to Turkey.

He urged the EU to increase efforts to effectively address the humanitarian and grave refugee crisis in the light of evolving needs.

The EU condemned Turkey's unilateral attack in northern and eastern Syria, which caused unacceptable human suffering, undermined the war against ISIS and severely threatened European security.
