IS... from horror to defeat began from Kobanî -1-

The Syrian crisis, in its third year, received a power represented by IS that created chaos in the country and changed the course of the war there. Now, we are going back to see how the war in Syria was before years, how IS has appeared, what is the details of the fateful battle in Kobanî which was the first defeat of IS, and its effect on the world on the fourth anniversary of the liberation of the city.

The Syrian arena before IS' emergence

By late 2014, the overwhelming chaos dominated most of the Syrian regions after three years of civil war whose objectives were indirectly controlled by the Turkish government led by Erdogan using extremist terrorist gangs such as Jabhet al-Nusra, Ahrar al-Sham and IS to eliminate the Autonomous Administration declared by the Syrian components in the north of the country, and push those terrorist gangs to take power in Syria.

On the other hand, the Syrian regime, supported by Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, sought to remove the Syrian opposition fighters from dozens of cities that have been turned into rubble by the Syrian regime's aircrafts and missile bombardment such as al-Qaseer, Harasta, Khan Sheikhoun, Aleppo, and al-Rastan… etc".

IS bears its fangs

IS appeared in Syria while the country was heading towards destruction, and no serious international action was taken against the bloody conflict. IS bore its fangs, relied on burning and slaughtering the Syrians as a means of subjugating them.

IS spread in Syria speedily. Hundreds of its mercenaries controlled on large areas of Syria and neighboring Iraq. Al-Mosel in Iraq, as well as al-Raqqa in Syria were fallen during hours in their hands. They had taken over the major camps of the Syrian and Iraqi armies and executed hundreds of soldiers. Then, the crisis in Syria took another direction.

IS fights in besieged Kobanî by Turkish support

It was only clashes with light weapons in the vicinity of a number of small villages on a number of axes near Kobanî in North Syria, as fighters came from the city and the neighboring villages to participate in defending their areas against any expansion of the terrorist gangs such as Jabhet al-Nusra which transferred to IS then.

IS has benefited from the media momentum promoted for its favor as an invincible force, as it has the power to control any area within hours. After agreements with the Turkish Intelligence, according to documents revealed by IS' Amirs formerly, IS had made three attempts to invade areas near the city of Kobanî, but all of which were failed, so they brought thousands of its mercenary fighters with military experience, who fought earlier in Afghanistan, Iraq and other countries, and dragged dozens of tanks seized from the Syrian and Iraqi armies towards the besieged city of Kobanî before two years of its control.

Turkey and IS had the same goal which is eliminating the city from which the 19th July Revolution was launched in North Syria when the elements of the Syrian regime were driven out of the city by the local population to spread the revolution to the rest of the cities in the north of the country. This is a moral, political and military blow to the Autonomous Administration in North Syria, which makes IS to benefit of the border crossing with Turkey.

IS controlled 300 villages and most of Kobanî neighborhoods within days

Over 300 villages on the outskirts of Kobanî city were controlled in a few days by IS in early October 2014. The region witnessed a massive displacement. At least 300,000 civilians, mostly women and children, fled to the city of Suruj in North Kurdistan within the Turkish lands to form a human wall to prevent the infiltration of the terrorists from the Turkish border into the neighborhoods of the city in conjunction with the survival of hundreds of young men and the elderly in the city to fight the fateful battle in their homes in front of the most terrorist gangs heavily armed with the latest types of heavy and medium weapons.

The only option available to the fighters was only to defend and deter the attack despite the small arms they possessed. They managed to stop IS' advance within the city's neighborhoods for 21 days until the arrival of the International Coalition warplanes which bombed the mercenaries inside the city to pave the way for the fighters in the People and Women Protection Units (YPG, YPJ) to advance inside the city, and liberate a number of neighborhoods.

World revolted to support Kobanî's resistance

01 November 2014 was declared to be the International Day of Solidarity with the Resistance in Kobanî. The airports, most of the public facilities in the European cities, United Nations buildings and Human Rights organizations were crowed with people who stood in solidarity with the fighters who defended Kobanî at that time. The protesters chanted slogans condemning the Turkish government which was supporting IS directly during the battles in the city.

The pictures of International fighters and the People and Women Protection Units (YPG, YPJ) who fought bravely in Kobanî city were hung in the public streets in various cities around the world such as Japan, Argentina and Afghanistan, as well as dozens of European countries, and the world's attention then has turned to the fateful battle which would be a threat for each citizen who lives in safety and stability in all countries of the world.

IS was exposed to first setback in Kobanî

With IS' fiercest battles which erupted in Kobanî's streets and neighborhoods, IS fighters came from all world's states, especially from Arab Maghreb. 300 thousand mercenaries spread in Syria and Iraq according to statistics revealed by one of IS' Amirs who has been detained by the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) since 2017.

3,000 of IS were killed in a try to control the last two neighborhoods in Kobanî city. IS was enforced to retreat because the fighters were resisting bravely and the shelling of the warplanes of the International Coalition which eliminated IS, especially in the battle of Pinchar pinar border crossing between Kobanî and Turkish territories.
Alliance of People and Women Protection Units (YPG and YPJ), international fighters and Free Syrian Army's fighters had been formed to liberate all Kobanî city's neighborhoods, and announced the great victory on 01 January 2015 after 134 days of the fiercest battles in the Syrian arena during the crisis' years. (YPG and YPJ) raised their flag over the hill of Kania Kurdan, east of the city in reference to the liberation of the entire city, and celebrations held in hundreds of cities around the world rejoicing in victory.

Tomorrow: the dream of Turkish expansion ends in the last pocket of IS.
