Pentagon: Turkey puts itself at risk of serious consequences after its attacks

The Pentagon has described the Turkish attacks on northern and eastern Syria as a threat to the progress made in fighting ISIS and a potential threat to US forces there, according to the Associated Press.

In a written statement on Friday, the Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said US Defense Secretary Mark Esper said in a telephone conversation on Thursday with his Turkish counterpart that the United States "opposes the incursion."

Before the attack, the Pentagon said it did not approve it.

Hoffman said Esper told his counterpart that the Turkish attacks "jeopardized" the progress made to defeat ISIS, and Esper urged Turkey to stop its attack.

Esper also said that Turkey was putting itself at risk of serious consequences after the attack on northern Syria, and expressed concern that this could harm US staff in Syria.
