Speaking at a news conference in Berlin, Pompeo said his country is working to find a political solution to the conflict in Syria and to prevent the escalation of violence. Noting America's efforts are to find a solution in Syria, and Security Council resolution 2254 is the reference," he said.
Pompeo added that Washington "forces its troops to work to achieve a mechanism to reduce the escalation of violence and establish a system as a protective area, to prevent attacks from the Syrian or Turkish sides."
"We are working collectively and we hope to make progress," he said.
Pompeo began a five-day visit to Berlin on Friday, where he met German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
The European tour of Pompeo includes Switzerland, the Netherlands and Britain.
