With the continued attacks of the Turkish occupation state against the areas of Başûr Kurdistan and its invasion of the territories of Başûr for a distance of 40 km, the social and popular reactions are increasing, especially that these attacks resulted in leaving civilian victims. The social and popular reactions have turned into resentment and political attitudes in conjunction with the statements made by the President of the Region’s government Nechirvan Barzani on July 4 as he legitimated the Turkish occupation, and described the presence of fighters of the Freedom Movement in Başûr as occupation.
Journalists from Başûr Kurdistan talked to Hawar news agency about the reasons and consequences of the Turkish occupation of Başûr, as well as the statements of Barzani and the role of journalists confronting the occupation.
'They seek to get the Kurdish people out of Başûr Kurdistan, as did in Afrin'
The Journalist Burhan Haji Suleiman spoke about the objectives of the Turkish occupation of Başûr territories, and said that the Turkish state will fight every Kurdish gesture or spark that moves towards freedom, whether in Kurdistan or anywhere in the world. Burhan Haji Suleiman said, "Before the world, the Turkish state attacked Afrin and drove the Kurdish people out of there." He stressed that the main objective of the Turkish state is not Qandil saying, "There are deeper and bigger schemes, the Turkish state seeks to control the entire territories of Başûr Kurdistan, and has special ambitions about the lands of Kirkuk, and as it occupied Afrin, drove the Kurds from there and settled instead of the families of the mercenaries, Turkey is seeking to do the same in Başûr Kurdistan too."
'Turkey wants to weaken the Kurds and control Kurdistan'
The journalist Shevan Mohammed talked about the aims of the Turkish occupation of Başûr Kurdistan saying, "This time, there are different objectives for the Turkish occupation of the territories of Başûr. In the 1990s, it was temporary and tactical, but now, it seeks to a permanent strategic occupation of the area, especially the areas between Zakho and Qandil reaching the Iranian borders." In the opinion of Suleiman, there are two main reasons for the Turkish occupation of the territories of Başûr; the first reason is that Turkey seeks to extend its control over the area, weaken the Kurds and control Kurdistan Region, while the second reason is that Turkey seeks to reach the Iranian borders.
Attacks against Qandil would not succeed
According to Shevan Mohammed, the attacks of the Turkish occupation army on Qandil will fail for two reasons. "Although Turkey has been acting so far as if Iran is on its side, but Iran has not shown any position so far. As we all know, there are two major forces in the Middle East; the Shia and Sunni. Iran and the Shiites of Iraq represent the Shiite side, and Turkey and Saudi Arabia represent the Sunni side. Despite some interim understandings between Turkey and Iran concerning the Kurdish Cause, but they remain conflicting forces, and therefore the proximity of the Turkish troops from the Iranian border will irritate Iran, so this attack would not succeed easily. On the other hand, the people of the area are not with Turkey, whoever stands with Turkey are the Protectors of the Villages in Bakur and some of the mercenary forces in Syria. Those are not the residents of the area, and cannot stay there long because the people of the area will not accept them. The winter is coming after months and the mountains of the area are very rugged. The Turkish army cannot fight in those mountains, but if a Kurdish party would support the Turkish occupation, and now the Democratic Party is the closest to Turkey, Turkey may benefit from the fragmentation of the Kurds.
'Barzani's statements disregard the Kurdish blood'
In his comments on the statements of Nechirvan Barzani which legitimize the Turkish occupation, the journalist Burhan Haji Suleiman said that these statements do not reflect the mouthpiece of the people of Kurdistan Region, but they are subjected to certain interests and relations between Kurdistan Democratic Party and the Turkish state. Suleiman expressed his displeasure with Barzani's statements which legitimize the killing of the Kurdish civilians at the hands of the Turkish army saying, "These statements disregard the Kurdish blood. In any other country, when the civilians are killed by another country, the government of that country responds to the attacks, but Barzani makes the Kurdish blood cheap for the sake of satisfying the foreign countries. These statements do not reflect the opinion of the people of Başûr, but they are related to the Democratic Party and the Justice Party. The people oppose any foreign occupation, and these statements inflict great harm to the Kurds and their blood.”
‘This occupation will lead to the division of Kurdistan Region’
The journalist Shevan Mohammed talked about the attitudes of the people and the political parties confronting the Turkish occupation noting, "The people of Başûr have always been against all forms of occupation, but the positions of the political parties are different. The Democratic Party stands beside Turkey, the other parties are silent, but the people reject the occupation. If this occupation continues, it will cause a rift in the Kurdish policy and among the Kurdish people, and it will lead to breaking out a civil war as happened in the nineties. Moreover, countries such as Iran and Turkey will benefit from the Kurdish division. We hope that the Kurdish people will unite their classes against the occupation. Otherwise, a great risk would threaten the Kurdish people’s national values. In the case of the continuation of this occupation, the people would repel it, and perhaps the Kurdish street would be divided into two parts."
'The National Union and Kurdistan Democratic Parties control the media'
About the attitudes and reactions of media professionals and journalists towards the Turkish occupation, the journalist Burhan Haji Suleiman said that the occupation has caused a national division in Kurdistan, so each party practices politics in isolation. Although the media and the intellectuals oppose the occupation and express their positions, they have not been able to influence the political parties.
Suleiman pointed out that the media such as the politics has been divided into two parts. The influential media outlets and channels are under the control of the journalists affiliated to parties. The independent media publishes news and reporters about the Turkish occupation, while the impact of such media remains weak. The main media outlets are under the control of the Democratic Party and the National Union.
