Russia: Regime’s advance allowed implementation of Sochi agreement after Turkey’s failure to do so

The Russian Ministry of Defense mentioned that the advance of the regime forces allowed the establishment of a safe zone there stipulated in the Sochi memorandum after Turkey had failed to carry out this mission.

The director of the Hmeimim Center for Reconciliation of the warring parties in Syria and affiliated with the Russian Ministry of Defense, the Major General Yuri Burenkov said in a statement issued on Wednesday evening: "The Syrian army extended its control over a side of the international road M5 which passes through the De-escalation zone of Idlib area, and defeated the terrorist armed formations of the headquarters for Hayet Tahrir al-Sham and the groups allied with it."

Burenkov added: "That resulted in the establishment of the safe zone stipulated in the Russian-Turkish memorandum which was concluded on September 17, 2018."

The director of Hmeimim Center made clear that the operation of the Syrian army assumed an urgent nature due to the failure of the Turkish side to implement the relevant provisions in the Sochi memorandum on the establishment of the demilitarized zone along the borders of the Idlib area to reduce the escalation."

He stressed: "The actions of government forces allowed ending the terrorist attacks and civilian deaths as a result of attacks and bombings by gunmen."
