Russian envoys meet Assad, discuss post-war efforts, trade

Several Russian envoys have met Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and discussed the constitutionality of trade, as well as ways to improve Syria's relations with neighboring Arab states, Reuters quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying.

Russia is a close ally of the Syrian regime, and in 2015 began a military intervention to support the forces of the regime, which reversed the course of the war in favor of the regime.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement late on Friday that Assad had met with Russia's envoy to Syria, Alexander Lavrentyev, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Verchinen and several Russian Defense Ministry officials.

Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov will meet Assad in Damascus later on Saturday to discuss cooperation in trade and the economy, Russian Interfax news agency quoted the Russian government as saying.
