The co-chair of the Democratic Society Movement issued a written statement regarding reports of a fire on the island of Imrali, where leader Abdullah Ocalan is being held.
The statement stated:
"Imrali fire is not just an ordinary event, and this event is part of the state of torture and isolation imposed on leader Abdullah Ocalan, which has been going on for 21 years. This fire has caused us a lot of anxiety and fears.
In order to reveal the causes of the fire in Imrali as well as obtain information about the situation of leader Abdullah Ocalan and announce it to the public opinion, independent delegations as well as lawyers must be allowed immediately to go to Imrali. In order to achieve this, all our people, and our political and social organizations, are required to organize events and activities in this regard, because solidarity with the leader is a historical responsibility. Today is the day of solidarity and gathering around the leader. Today is the day of struggle and the performance of historical responsibility."
