UN: 80% of Syrians live below poverty line

The UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutierrez said that the Syrian crisis has not been over yet, and that more than 80 % of the Syrians live below the poverty line.


Stéphane Dujarric, the spokesman for the UN Secretary-General made the remarks at a regular news conference on Friday and noted, "The crisis has not been over yet for millions of people in Syria who have lived eight years of war."

"More than 11 million people still need some form of assistance, including food, health care, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene, and even their livelihoods," Stéphane Dujarric said.

"The United Nations and its partners demand the donors to continue supporting the vital, life-saving and protective needs for more than 11 million people," he said.

"Displacement continues to be a feature of the crisis as the number of the internal displaced persons is estimated 6.2 million," the report said noting that some 1.4 million internally displaced persons have returned to their homes over the past year.
