In the last two decades of the 20th century, the Kurds in the four parts of occupied Kurdistan and in the diaspora suffered a boiling state, many international plots plotted against the Kurds, massacres, exodus, burning of villages, identity killings, kidnappings and imprisonment, all that to curb their decades-long revolutions for freedom and dignity as a persecuted people for a hundred years without stopping.
In Rojava, the peak of persecution lay in the agreements signed at the expense of the extermination of the Kurdish people in Syria to eradicate the identity, culture and land of this people, for example, the Adana Agreement between the Ba'athist and Turkish system to implement racist and national economic projects to displace the Kurds from their regions and eliminate their identity as much as possible.
These agreements were carried out on the ground in the form of massacres, crimes, and national and cultural melting down with the Qamshilo uprising in 2004. The aim is to exterminate a people by another people, create strife and conflicts to differentiate and deepen racism and hatred for the purpose of comprehensive and complete control over all, and the looting of all their will and what they have. Acquired from resources and material and moral energy.
The conditions for the official announcement of the YPG in 2011
2011 marked the beginning of the popular movement in Syria, as a continuation of popular revolutions in the Middle East against authoritarian and corrupt regimes, which the Kurds described as the "spring of peoples" against dictatorships at the time.
The Syrian people took the matter as a popular emotional state against the government, and the latter must be overthrown, but it was not apparent the strategy of this movement yet, nor the extent of the level of change in this framework, that is, after the collapse of the regime.
The other is the dangerous Turkish intervention in the region and the support of the Muslim Brotherhood line in Egypt, Tunisia and Libya to bring them to power and control the policy and militarization of these countries, in order to historical and national aspirations previously announced by the Justice and Development Party, within the dreams of the new Ottoman Empire on the territory of neighboring countries.
These external conditions, as well as the internal conditions that the Kurds know within Syria, namely that they are in a state of war with a racist and dictatorial regime alongside an opposition that gradually deviates to the Turkish line, so where do the Kurds remain, and they are the most affected and suffering from both sides for decades ..?
The rescued response was the project of the democratic nation that the Democratic Society Movement (TEV-DEM) carried in Rojava and Syria, represented by the third line, which is the change and announcement of a national project away from the struggle for power, and achieving the hopes of the components in achieving their rights and living in dignity with justice and equality next to each other, and applying that through Autonomous Administrations according to the values and nature of each region.
The position of the Kurds was not to distance oneself from the war, but rather to provide the optimal solution for the people away from killing the people for themselves and opening the way for external intervention, except that a small part of the Syrian people, on top of them are the Kurds who have the idea, they followed the project of the democratic nation, keeping their regions safe from war and fighting between the people.
As a result of the worsening crisis and the spread of infighting and the entry of foreign agendas, accompanied by terrorist organizations and mercenaries serving their interests, the conditions were favorable, despite the lack of resources, to show a defensive position such as the political position. Therefore, he announced the establishment of the People's Protection Units (YPG) officially at the end of 2011, to protect the third line, which 4 million Syrians have taken refuge in Rojava and north Syria in general, and these units have moved in each of Kobani, Al-Jazeera, Afrin, and Sheikh Maksoud neighborhood in the city of Aleppo.
The emergence of this military force in the neighborhoods and villages with light weapons and hunting rifles and batons, in order to protect the people from any attack, and restore security in the neighborhoods and villages to prevent chaos.
How the YPG ... has transformed from small popular groups into a world-renowned military force
It is the goal to establish such as these forces and principles upon which they were founded, and they were applied on the ground, that made them grow and grow to embrace the whole people, since the people themselves were the ones who protected their values and gains. It adopts the idea of a democratic and ecological society and the freedom of women as a basis for them without any religious, national, sexual, political, or party discrimination, and protects the country and the citizen from all external attacks according to the concept of legitimate defense, as its primary duty, and it is voluntary.
By applying these principles on the ground, young men and women from all components of Rojava have come together to protect their values, cohesion increased further with the support of Kurdish and Arab clans and notables of Christian and Yazidi religions in the region.
On April 4, 2013, after the increase in the number of female fighters within the ranks of the People's Protection Units (YPG) and acceptance of the idea among this segment of society, it announced the establishment of Women's Protection Units (YPJ) as a special force for women, which would move independently, with the exception of public issues, and would conduct its activities and organize it according to its own internal system.
Historic human achievements during a short period of foundation
The People's Protection and Women’s Protection Units (YPG,YPJ) have proven in a short period of time their military strength in all of Rojava, and have liberated the majority of the cities of Rojava and north Syria from the Ba'athist regime and mercenary gangs, the terrorist Jabhat al-Nusra and Ahrar al-Sham, which are deployed in various parts of the region.
It presented heroic resistance in the face of attacks by ISIS mercenaries and the Turkish-backed Syrian National Alliance mercenaries, and played a historical role in forming a safe zone, which embraces more than 5 million Syrians from the region and those who went towards it fleeing the war at home, compared to other Syrian regions and protecting them.
The YPG and YPJ also fought many battles and resistance during 8 years, a number of which were under the roof of the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, including opening the largest and most dangerous humanitarian corridor between Rojava and Şengal mountains, which were surrounded by ISIS mercenaries and committed horrific massacres against the Yazidi community there. The liberation of more than 300,000 civilians and their delivery to Rojava after sacrificing 150 fighters in this humanitarian corridor.
Likewise, the historical resistance in Kobani, which turned into an icon of the resistance in the whole world, as it fought against the global terrorist invasion represented by ISIS, which is directly supported by Turkey, between September 15, 2014 and June 2015, along with the liberation of most of the southern regions of Rojava and the north and east regions ,as Tel-Hamis, Tal Barak, Jaza'a, al-Hol, Jabal Kazwan, Sarrin, Tal Abyad, Ain Issa, Manbij and chasing the remnants of terrorism to the banks of the Euphrates in both al-Raqqa and Deir-ez-Zor.
Since the fall of 2014, the YPG and the YPG have been coordinating and communicating with International Coalition Forces against ISIS mercenaries and conducting their work within the coalition.
The YPG is a key pillar of the SDF
Initially when the YPG was formed its structure was of the Kurds. However, within the framework of the idea of a participatory life and a democratic nation, many people of other components joined them in the form of regiments, whenever a region of the system or mercenaries was liberated, as mentioned above.
The organization of the YPG differs from the mentality of the state army and its bases. Therefore, they accept the inclusion of all groups of society. It is this mentality that prompted many Arab tribes and the Syriac component to include their sons in the ranks of the YPG later. Over time, Arab and Syriac battalions were formed. Examples include the Arab Sandid Forces, the Assyrian Khabur Guards, and the Syriac Military Council.
This force, due to its achievements, principles and military formation, has become a great hope for all Syrians, and has become a broader organization. A number of revolutionary military forces representing all components of Syria announced the establishment of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on October 15, 2015. According to the structures, ethics and principles of the YPG to protect and strive for society,
The People's Protection Units and Women's protection Units (YPG,YPJ) will become the backbone of the Syrian Democratic Forces SDF, and young men and women, as well as clans and constituents, will become more regiments to liberate their regions and enhance their protection from any external or authoritarian attack.
