On its 23rd anniversary, PYD members affirm their continued struggle to build democratic Syria

Yesterday, September 20, marked the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of the Democratic Union Party, which was founded in 2003. In this context, several members and leaders of the party spoke to our agency.

Party member Talha Shukri Ali said: “I extend my congratulations on the anniversary of the establishment of the Democratic Union Party to leader Abdullah Ocalan and to all the party’s comrades and members. Victory will be on our side through our struggle.”

She added: “As a party, we have always struggled and continue to work with all our strength, and we affirm our commitment to preserve the gains of the martyrs, as the Democratic Union Party is the party of martyrs.”

For his part, party member Mohammad Kozri said: “Blessed be the 23rd anniversary of our party for the components of the region. The party has always struggled in the footsteps of the martyrs, and we pledge to continue following in their footsteps, as many of our party’s administrators who worked to consolidate the party’s principles and organise society have been martyred.”

Kozri stressed the need to continue the struggle at the same pace until victory is achieved and legitimate rights are safeguarded, particularly the rights of the Kurdish people.

For his part, Talat Younes said: “Twenty-three years of struggle under the leadership of the Democratic Union Party, and many martyrs, such as the martyr Shilan, Fuad, Zakaria, Jamil, Zainab, Isa Hiso, and finally Salih Muslim, who struggled for a free Rojava and a democratic Syria.”

He added that although the party “has been subjected to many attacks, targeting, and attempts to eliminate it, they have become an impregnable barrier against these efforts,” noting that the struggle expanded in the face of “the chauvinistic Baath mentality, which pursued a policy of exclusion and marginalisation.”

Younes pointed out that the Autonomous Administration experience is an important one, particularly for building a future Syria. He concluded by affirming that party members are renewing their pledge to continue the struggle in the spirit of the revolution until the rights of the Kurdish people in the region are achieved, through building a democratic system based on the interconnectedness of peoples and reaching a democratic Syria.
