Arab newspapers published over the past week covered a series of rapidly unfolding regional developments, led by the Strait of Hormuz crisis and the repercussions of the U.S.-Iran war, alongside developments in Gaza, the West Bank and Lebanon. Israeli pressure on the various fronts of confrontation also intensified, fueling growing fears that the conflict could expand.

Hormuz and Maritime Routes at the Heart of the Confrontation

Independent Arabia focused on the U.S.-Iran trajectory in an analysis titled, “What Is Trump’s Next Move in the Conflict Against Iran?” The paper said the confrontation was at a “dangerous crossroads,” as indirect contacts through mediators continued while military tensions remained high across the region.

In a related context, Al-Ahram examined the interconnectedness of the Strait of Hormuz, the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and the Suez Canal in an article titled, “The War of the Straits! The Growing Role of Maritime Routes in Regional Conflicts.” It said the war had acquired a regional dimension, with maritime routes becoming influential arenas in the conflict.

Al Khaleej linked crises in the international system to simultaneous wars, warning that the closure of the Strait of Hormuz threatens energy flows at a time when “one-fifth of the world’s oil supplies” passes through the strait.

Gaza, the West Bank and the Conflict’s Spillover into Lebanon

On the Palestinian front, Al-Quds Al-Arabi warned of the repercussions of Israeli raids on the Al-Aqsa Mosque and statements concerning the possibility of launching a war in the West Bank. It linked these developments to settlement expansion, land confiscation and attempts to impose new realities on the ground.

The newspaper also addressed the situation in Lebanon in an article titled, “Lebanon Between Two Elections... How Will It Face Israeli and U.S. Pressure?” linking political and security developments to the upcoming Israeli elections and U.S. midterm elections.

In the same context, Al-Ahram discussed the nature of the electoral competition inside Israel in an analysis titled, “Divergent Polls and an Israeli Political Landscape Open to Complex Alliances,” examining how the competition is being shaped by the wars in Gaza and Lebanon and by regional calculations.

Lebanon Faces Political and Security Realignment

Asharq Al-Awsat focused on developments in Lebanon in an article titled, “The Foot in the Context,” tracing the course of relations between the Free Patriotic Movement and Hezbollah and the changes that have taken place in their relationship over the past several years.

Meanwhile, Lebanon’s Al-Sharq examined the question, “What Awaits Hezbollah?” addressing the repercussions of the war on southern Lebanon, including the scale of damage and displacement, as well as President Joseph Aoun’s moves in the coming phase.

In an article titled, “Sunrise and Sunset – After the Certain Transformations: Results or Repercussions?”, the newspaper linked Lebanon’s future to the cumulative regional shifts, stressing that the recent developments and wars will leave deep effects on the country and the region, and that returning to the previous status quo has become extremely difficult.
