Today, the Serêkaniyê Displaced Persons Committee issued a statement marking the seventh anniversary of the city’s occupation, carrying hopeful news for displaced residents and announcing the beginning of a new phase of voluntary return, along with preparations to receive returnees in the city center.

Speaking during the reading of the statement in Hasakah, committee member Jamil Mahmoud reviewed the committee’s history. It was established on July 9, 2021, to serve as an independent voice for displaced people and advocate for their legitimate demands for a safe and dignified return, as well as fair compensation for the material and moral damages they have suffered during years of forced displacement.

Mahmoud said: “Tomorrow, our city enters its eighth year under occupation, but today the dream we have fought for over the past seven years is becoming a reality. We announce to our people the launch of the fourth convoy for a safe, voluntary and dignified return to the villages of Serêkaniyê.”

He added that efforts would not be limited to the villages and countryside, noting that preparations and arrangements are currently underway in the center of Serêkaniyê to receive residents returning to their homes in the city in the near future.

The committee concluded its statement by affirming its commitment to make every possible effort to facilitate the return of residents and provide them with the necessary requirements, stressing that resolving the displacement issue and closing the camps for displaced people will be its top priority in the coming phase.
