Protesters block Damascus–Baghdad international highway with burning tires in Dumayr

Protesters blocked the Damascus–Baghdad international highway in the city of Dumayr, in Damascus countryside, this morning using burning tires, in protest against the rerouting of part of the highway through the city and the associated traffic safety concerns, particularly with schools reopening.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, the protest was prompted by trucks and vehicles passing through the city, amid residents’ complaints about the risks posed to the public, especially children and students, and calls for measures to reduce traffic accidents.

In this context, the director of the Eastern Ghouta district held a meeting with the protesters, during which he outlined measures the government intends to take, including holding violating drivers accountable, checking official documents and driving licenses, and issuing fines for exceeding speed limits.

He also proposed imposing a fee of 100 new Syrian pounds on truck drivers, to be allocated to cleaning and repairing roads within the city.

Residents of Dumayr are calling for solutions to reduce the risks posed by truck traffic through the city, ensure public safety, and maintain smooth traffic flow.
