The Free Women’s Organisation of East Kurdistan (KJAR) issued a statement today, Thursday, 15 October, following the Revolutionary Court in Tehran issuing a second death sentence against Kurdish political and human rights activist Warisheh Moradi, who is detained in Evin Women’s Prison. The statement held the judicial and security institutions of the Islamic Republic directly responsible for her life and health.

The statement explained that Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court, presided over by Abo Al-Qasem Salawati, issued a new death sentence against Warisheh Moradi on charges of belonging to a rebel group, despite Iran’s Supreme Court having previously overturned the death sentence and referred the case back to the court for retrial. According to published reports on the case, the court did not conduct the investigations requested by the Supreme Court.

The organisation described the reissuance of the death sentence as an attempt to retaliate against the struggle of freedom-loving women and the “Jin Jiyan Azadî” movement. It noted that Warisheh Moradi had been subjected to physical and psychological torture and denied medical treatment and family visits during her detention, which has lasted more than three years.

The statement held the judicial authorities and security agencies of the Islamic Republic fully and directly responsible for the violence inflicted on Warisheh Moradi and for her physical and psychological well-being. It called on international human rights organisations, women’s unions and liberation movements to intervene immediately to overturn the death sentences and secure the unconditional release of Warisheh Moradi and all political prisoners facing the same punishment.

Kurdish activist Warisheh Moradi, who has been detained since August 2023, faces a death sentence that the Revolutionary Court reissued following a controversial judicial review. The initial sentence, issued in November 2024, was overturned by the Supreme Court due to serious deficiencies in the investigations and procedural violations. Nevertheless, the repeated sentencing without completing the required investigations has raised serious questions among human rights circles and the defence team about compliance with fair trial guarantees.
