Student protests against the decision by the Ministry of Education of the Syrian transitional government to limit Kurdish-language instruction in schools to just three classes per week continue.

In this context, students from the city of Derik in the Jazira region gathered this morning in front of the city’s Educational Complex building and held a protest, expressing their rejection of the Ministry of Education’s decision.

Following the protest, the students marched towards the Derik District Directorate building, where they met with Derik District Director Shiro Shiro, who listened to their demands. These included cancelling and amending the Ministry of Education’s decision, teaching curricula in Kurdish, and granting the Kurdish language constitutional recognition. Shiro expressed his support for students’ rights within a new, democratic Syria that embraces the rights of all its peoples.

Shiro stressed that the district directorate would work to convey the students’ voices and demands to the relevant authorities and examine the demands they had put forward.

The march concluded with students chanting slogans calling for the rights of the Kurdish language and its recognition.
