tomorrow… Jazera residents to gather in qamishlo to demand education in Kurdish language

Qamishlo is preparing tomorrow to host a mass gathering attended by residents and students from various cities and towns across the Jazera region, rejecting the Education Ministry’s decision in the transitional government to limit Kurdish-language instruction to three classes per week, and demanding that curricula be taught in Kurdish and that the right to education in the mother tongue be guaranteed.

The Popular Initiative in the Jazera region is organising a mass gathering tomorrow, Tuesday, in front of the Martyrs of 12 March Stadium in Qamishlo at 11:30 a.m., with participation from various parts of Hasakah Governorate.

Citizens from Derik, Amuda, Derbasiyah, Çil Agha, Tal Tamr, Tirbespiye, Girkê Legê, Qamishlo and Hasakah are expected to attend the gathering, which aims to express rejection of the decision by the Ministry of Education in the transitional government and demand an expansion of the scope of education in the Kurdish language.

The gathering comes amid continued reactions rejecting the decision issued on August 27, which limited Kurdish-language instruction to a specified number of hours per week under decision No. 2068/964. This has been met with ongoing activities and protests involving students, their families and various segments of society in the cities and towns of the Jazera region.

Since the decision was issued, the cities and towns of the region have witnessed a series of vigils, sit-ins and statements calling for the right to education in Kurdish. Participants stress that limiting Kurdish-language instruction to three classes per week does not meet their demands for education in their mother tongue.
