ANHA correspondents reported that a traffic accident occurred in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor early Thursday.

According to preliminary information, several travelers sustained injuries of varying severity when a bus collided with a medium-sized truck on the main road in the town of Shumaytiyah in western Deir ez-Zor countryside.

The collision occurred as the two vehicles were traveling along the town’s main road, injuring several passengers on the bus as well as people traveling in the truck. Local residents and relevant authorities intervened to provide assistance and transport the injured to Deir ez-Zor National Hospital.

As of publication, no official statement had been issued specifying the number of injured people or the nature of their injuries. The cause of the accident also remained officially unclear.

The accident comes amid recurring traffic accidents on major roads in Deir ez-Zor province, particularly the road linking Deir ez-Zor and Palmyra. In July, the road witnessed a major traffic accident when two passenger buses collided in the al-Sukhnah area, killing 35 people and injuring 30 others, according to the official toll announced by Syria’s Ministry of Health.

Residents say the accidents are linked to the deteriorating condition of some sections of the Deir ez-Zor–Damascus road, including its narrow width, the absence of a median barrier along parts of the road, and the presence of potholes. The Ministry of Transport had previously announced that the road had been included in rehabilitation projects.
